Historical Society of Princeton Announces Gail F. Stern Internship
Princeton, New Jersey, November 24, 2009– The Historical Society of Princeton (HSP) proudly announces Nicole Frisone as the first recipient of the Gail F. Stern Internship for Ethnic History. The Gail F. Stern Internship is named in honor of the HSP’s former director, Gail F. Stern (1950-2006), who championed the history of ethnic communities through exhibitions, programs, and publications during the course of her career in New Jersey and Pennsylvania museums.

Ms. Frisone holds a Master’s Degree in library science from Rutgers University and is currently pursuing her doctorate in history at the University of Minnesota. During her undergraduate career at New York University, Nicole focused on the turbulence of the 1960s and conducted oral history interviews with civil rights activists for an independent study project. Nicole’s research project during her Stern Internship will focus on the late 1950s integrated housing developments of Morris Milgram, including Maplecrest in Princeton and Glen Acres in West Windsor. The project will result in a research paper and a public program. Eileen Morales, HSP’s Curator of Collections, will direct Nicole’s research during the project.

Volunteer Opportunities at the Historical Society of Princeton

Volunteers for Out-of-Town Trips Committee:

The Historical Society of Princeton is looking for new volunteers to help plan our popular Out-of-Town trips. Almost every month HSP plans exciting day-trips to historic places, museums, gardens, etc. in the tri-state area. These are all developed and run by talented, creative, hard-working volunteers! Perhaps you’ve already been on one of our exciting trips to OHEKA Castle in Long Island or Katonah, NY for the Caramoor music festival, or Fairmont Park in Philadelphia, or any of the wide variety of trips that we conducted in 2009 and many years prior.

Responsibilities:

Volunteer committee members are responsible for generating new ideas for places to visit, contacting museums/sites and restaurants to schedule reservations and program specifics,  and booking transportation for the group. Volunteers are also responsible for leading the tours – tour sizes vary from 25-40 people generally. Volunteers work in pairs so that tasks can be shared for each trip! Volunteer committee members also attend planning meetings 4 times per year.

Join the fun! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call Jeanette Cafaro at the Historical Society of Princeton at 609.921.6748 ext. 100 or jeanette@princetonhistory.org.

Walking Tour Guides:

Do you LOVE Princeton history, enjoying walking, and like to talk to people?  Then consider becoming an HSP Walking Tour Guide!  Our dedicated guides share a wealth of information about Princeton’s rich history as they stroll around town with locals, fellow New Jerseyans, and tourists from around the globe.  Our Classic Walking Tours are offered every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. year-round and have become a visitors’ favorite as well as a vibrant part of HSP programs.  Help us keep this program healthy by becoming a guide!

Responsibilities:

Walking tour guides sign up regularly to lead as many two-hour Sunday tours and/or private tours as they prefer. Groups range in size from 5-30 people. Guides also attend one or two annual planning meetings. HSP is seeking guides for both our Classic Walking Tours and the Albert E. Hinds Memorial Walking Tour (African American Life in Princeton).

Join the fun! If you are interested in becoming an HSP volunteer, please call Jeanette Cafaro at the Historical Society of Princeton at 609.921.6748 ext. 100 or email her at jeanette@princetonhistory.org.
