LABOR

Agriculture is a labor intensive industry -- from tilling to seeding to harvesting to raising animals. Though mechanization has replaced some labor needs, the story of agriculture is forever entwined with the story of agricultural laborers. Over the course of New Jersey’s agricultural history, farm labor has consisted of self-employed farm owners and their families, the workers they hire, and, in the early days of New Jersey agriculture, the workers they enslaved.
