Clarke Cottage

545 Mercer Road

Part of The Next Generations’ Yeoman Farmers.

545

Originally a small cottage, this house was built on the original 1,200 acre tract of Benjamin Clarke (see Benjamin Clarke House), and it remained in the Clarke family for many decades. Parts of the building date from the early 18th century -- perhaps as early as 1725 -- but it is not known exactly who built it. It may have been lived in by Clarkes or rented out as a tenant house. In 1760, Joachim Gulick of New York may have owned the property; however, it returned to Clarke ownership before the end of the century, and remained in the family long after as well.
