The Captain's House

306 Nassau Street

Part of Jugtown.

This house was probably built around 1760 by a man with the last name Vanderveer. It was later occupied by Roger Gerard van Polanan, a diplomat from the Netherlands. In his many roles serving with the Dutch government, Polanan lived in Java, South Africa, and various parts of Europe. Appointed to an ambassador role at the court of the United States in 1795, he then spent the remainder of his life on this side of the Atlantic. He is now buried in Connecticut.

Later Namesake: The Captain’s House is named for Captain William Rogers, who lived here from 1836-66.
