18. Elks Lodge

In 1937, the Elks moved from 30 Maclean Street to their present location at 124 Birch Avenue. They purchased this building in 1948. Membership in fraternal organizations such as this was common among African Americans, who were barred from joining all-white groups and denied services in many restaurants and bars.
