Old Stone House / James Clarke/David Brearly House

487 Stockton Street

Part of The Next Generations’ Yeoman Farmers.

487

Easily identified by its striking fieldstone composition, this house was built sometime after 1749 on the property of James Clarke, son of Benjamin who first settled in the area (see Benjamin Clarke House). At some point after, it may have been owned by David Brearly of Lawrenceville, a New Jersey political figure and signer of the United States Constitution. It is thought that a blacksmith lived here during the Revolutionary period, and that his shop was at 481 Stockton Street.

Original Sections: not much altered from the original appearance of the Quaker settlement
