The Grand IllusionJean Renoir’s anti-war film is one of the masterpieces of cinema. Jean Gabin and Pierre Fresnay star as French soldiers grappling with their own class differences after being captured and held in a World War I German prison camp. Also starring Erich von Stroheim as the unforgettable German Captain von Rauffenstein. This film is reported to have brought J. Robert Oppenheimer to tears when he and his wife Kitty saw it at the Princeton Garden Theatre during its initial release.

This screening is in collaboration with the Garden Theatre, and will be introduced by Eve Mandel, HSP’s Director of Programs and Outreach. An Oppenheimer-themed walking tour will be offered this summer, in conjunction with the July 21 release of the Christopher Nolan film, Oppenheimer.
