Expert Eye: European Furniture

Throughout the centuries, Europe has seen the development of different furniture styles, often with local variations between countries. Sebastian Clarke, Director of Trusts, Estates and Appraisals at Rago Arts and Auction Center, will speak about the history and designs of European furniture, and give participants an up-close and personal look at items from HSP’s Einstein Furniture Collection. Clarke will also share tips on how to develop your own personal furniture collection.
Guests are invited to bring their own pieces (or photographs) for identification and valuation following the talk.

Sebastian Clarke is the Director of Trusts, Estates and Appraisals at Rago Auctions in Lambertville, New Jersey. He has over 20 years of experience in the trade and has served as a Specialist in the European Furniture department at Sotheby’s, as Director of the English and Continental furniture department at Freeman’s and at Doyle New York as a Senior Vice-President and Director of the English and Continental Furniture and Decorations department. Sebastian is fortunate enough to be an appraiser on the hit PBS show Antiques Roadshow. He is regularly featured as a specialist in furniture, decorative arts, sculpture and metalwork and silver.


Mr. Clarke is sits on the board of directors for the Appraisers Association of American and is also a USPAP compliant certified member of the Appraisers Association. He has been a featured contributor to CNNs Out Front with Erin Burnett and served on and acted as head of the vetting committee for the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art and Antiques Show. He is also an auctioneer, well-known for his work on the charity circuit.
